BCBA Required Courses: 2027 Content Areas and Hours

BCBA required courses depend on the requirements in effect when you apply. For applicants preparing under the BACB’s 2027 BCBA requirements, the coursework must cover six content areas and 315 instructional hours. The areas are Basic Principles of Behavior, Theory and Philosophy in Behavior Analysis, Research Methods in Behavior Analysis, Behavior Assessment and Intervention, Organizational Behavior Management, and Ethics in Behavior Analysis.

The 2027 table is not a universal substitute for your handbook or program review. Your coursework also needs the right degree level, grades, institution, timing, and Pathway 2 Program Contact when that pathway applies. Supervised fieldwork and the BCBA examination are separate requirements. BCBA Required Courses Under the 2027 Requirements

The BACB’s 2027 BCBA Requirements page lists the following content areas and minimum instructional hours. “Freestanding course” means the required content constitutes the majority of that course, so a program’s course titles and syllabi matter—not only the total number of credits.

The table is a planning reference, not an individual determination. The BACB can review an applicant’s transcript and documentation in the context of the complete requirements.

Conditions Beyond the BCBA Course Names

For the 2027 requirements, the BACB says qualifying behavior-analytic coursework must satisfy more than a subject label. Check these conditions with your program or Pathway 2 contact:

• The coursework is completed in a program with a qualified Pathway 2 Program Contact registered with the BACB, when Pathway 2 applies.
• The coursework is completed at the master’s or doctoral level at the qualifying institution where you are enrolled.
• The coursework is completed within 10 years of the year the application is submitted.
• You receive academic credit for the coursework.
• You earn a passing grade—C or higher in a graded course, or pass in a pass/fail system—in each course.
• The entirety of the coursework is not completed in less than one calendar year under the BACB’s definition.

If you are using a program’s checklist, compare every item with the current BCBA Handbook. A course title that sounds similar to an official content area does not prove that the required content, level, hours, or transcript evidence is present.

Which BCBA Course Requirements Apply to You?

The application date and completeness of the application matter. The BACB says significant BCBA and BCaBA requirement changes take effect January 1, 2027. To be reviewed under the current 2022 requirements, a complete application—including payment and all required documents—must be received by December 31, 2026.

That means opening an application, completing one course, or finishing fieldwork alone does not create a general guarantee that the 2022 requirements apply. If your plan crosses the transition, read the official BCBA transition guidance and ask your program to map completed and in-progress coursework to the requirements for your intended application date.

Do not use a generic 2027 course list to decide that every older course is invalid. The correct question is whether your specific coursework and complete application meet the rules that govern your application. Keep transcripts, syllabi, course dates, grades, and attestation records together so the comparison is evidence-based.

Coursework Is Not Fieldwork

BCBA coursework supplies academic content; supervised fieldwork supplies supervised experience. Both are part of the certification pathway, but they are documented differently. The official 2027 requirements page says applicants must complete supervised fieldwork in applied behavior analysis, while the BCBA Handbook contains the detailed fieldwork standards.

A required course in assessment, intervention, or organizational behavior management does not automatically count as fieldwork. Likewise, a fieldwork placement does not replace a missing content area or instructional-hour requirement. Ask your program how it supports each part, who signs the forms, and what you must arrange independently.

How to Audit Your BCBA Course Plan

1. Write the application year you are targeting and identify whether the 2022 or 2027 transition guidance applies.
2. List every course that appears on your official transcript, including institution, level, dates, grade, and credits or hours.
3. Map each course to one of the official content areas without double-counting the same hours.
4. Check whether the area requires a freestanding course and whether Behavior Assessment and Intervention is split into two courses for 2027.
5. Confirm the program contact, attestation, transcript, and application-document workflow.
6. Keep a separate fieldwork log and compare it with the current handbook’s supervision standards.

Common BCBA Required-Course Mistakes

• Using a 2022 course list as if it were the 2027 table.
• Counting course titles instead of reviewing content, hours, grades, and the transcript.
• Assuming 315 total hours can be distributed in any structure.
• Ignoring the requirement for a qualified Pathway 2 Program Contact.
• Counting supervised fieldwork as a substitute for academic coursework.
• Assuming a passing exam replaces a missing eligibility requirement.
• Relying on a school brochure that predates the 2027 requirements.
• Submitting an incomplete application while assuming the transition deadline is protected.
